We offer programming throughout the communities of Mountain View County to support and encourage parents in their role as a child’s first and most important teacher. All family literacy programs are offered at no cost to the participants. Pre-registration is required as space is limited.
Books for Babies
Offered in cooperation with the Public Health Nurses, parents with a new baby are provided with a canvas book bag containing a board book, a picture/story book, and information on the importance of reading to and with babies and young children. If you have not received your book bag, please speak with the Public Health Nurse on your next visit to the clinic.
The First Years: Building Baby’s Brain
This program focuses on how babies and toddlers learn and develop, with particular emphasis on the day-to-day interaction parents and other caregivers can engage in and to have fun and maximize the child’s brain development. This program is offered in conjunction with the post-natal programs presented by Public Health Nurses in Olds, Sundre and Didsbury. Interested parent groups may also arrange to have the program presented during their regular meetings.
Rhyme Time
A fun, interactive program for parents and their children from infants to age 3½ years. Participants learn a variety of songs, rhymes, and finger plays to do with their children, as well as participate in story telling. This oral literacy program helps children enjoy and have fun with language, and supports language development, sound discrimination, and rhyming skills. Parents also share ideas on how to use the songs, rhymes and stories as positive, effective parenting tools.
